In lieu of chapters, Hejinian begins each brief section with a phrase like “a pause, a rose, something on paper”and the section that follows doesn’t trace much of a narrative connection oife that heading. It presents life as a whole that is at once more than its constituent parts and yet incomplete and ongoing. If reality is trying to express itself in words it is certainly taking the long way around.

I guarantee, no matter how bright you are, you’ll get lost reading this book.
